This publication does not offer reader accounts or comments and does not build advertising profiles. Cloudflare Web Analytics is enabled to measure site visits and page performance. Measurement is disabled for visitors in the European Union. Cloudflare describes its Web Analytics service as not collecting or using visitors’ personal data; see Cloudflare Web Analytics documentation for details.

We do not set non-essential cookies for analytics. Cloudflare and other infrastructure providers may process technical request data to deliver and protect the site; their handling is governed by their own terms and applicable law.

Daily page statistics

We count successful HTML page requests from all countries, including the European Union, to understand demand for our articles and improve this publication. Our statistics store only the publication, canonical page path, calendar day in Europe/Berlin, request count and a broad classification (unclassified traffic, recognised automation or our own monitoring). Query strings, search terms, IP addresses, raw browser identifiers and individual request timestamps are not stored in these statistics. We do not set cookies, create visitor identifiers, fingerprint devices or build visitor histories for this measurement.

Existing request headers and, where available, Cloudflare bot classification are evaluated transiently to separate recognised automation. Unrecognised bots may remain in the other totals. These are server request counts, not unique people or proof that an article was read; browser-cached views may not reach the server. Daily aggregates are retained for up to approximately 400 days and then removed by a daily cleanup. Statistics are restricted to the operator through the existing Cloudflare account. Where personal data is processed in handling the underlying request, the purpose of this minimal statistical processing is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving our publications (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Worldwide browser statistics

Separately from the Cloudflare Web Analytics setting above, our own first-party script counts visible page views and external or direct entries from all countries. Internal navigation, reloads and back navigation do not start a new visit. We respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. No cookies, local storage, visitor identifiers or device fingerprints are used. We do not retain IP addresses, full referrers or query parameters in this measurement. Known bots and our own tests are separated; the remaining counts are not a count of unique people.

Only the canonical page, publication, calendar day, broad traffic category and aggregate page-view/entry counts are retained for approximately 400 days. A random delivery key for each page view is kept separately for at most 48 hours to prevent duplicate retries; it cannot link different page views or identify a visitor. These statistics have the same operator-only access and publication-improvement purpose described above.
